Explore the diverse flora and fauna on the Downs from season to season through personal observations and photographs

A Happy New Year to you all! And a frosty one on Banstead Downs, although by the time I got out for a walk the frost was lingering only in a few shady spots, but I managed to get shots of frost encrusting the leaves of a young Red Dead-nettle (Lamium purpureum) and covering a crust fungus on a felled tree stump.

Following on from my post of 2 days ago I add three more trees to the ‘can you pick out a tree from its leaf buds?’ images.

Another tree (or shrub) showing new leaf buds is Dog-rose (Rosa canina) and I found one Common Honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum) creeper with some of the vines already showing new terminal leaf development.
