Explore the diverse flora and fauna on the Downs from season to season through personal observations and photographs

Butterfly numbers generally are dwindling, although Small Copper numbers have increased again. Gatekeeper and Meadow Brown still dominate, but there are still significant numbers of Chalkhill Blue, even though these are starting to look increasingly worn and tatty. The odd Speckled Wood, Red Admiral and Brimstone are still to be seen.

There were no new insects seen today but after yesterday’s first Box Bug, which was an adult, I photographed a late instar nymph Box Bug (Gonocerus acuteangulatus) this morning. Other photos include Sycamore Felt Gall (Aceria pseudoplatani), about 7 weeks on from my first photos, showing the mature dark brown colour as opposed to the earlier pale green or cream, and another example of the Holly Leaf Miner (Phytomyza ilicis).
