There are two reliable locations for seeing the Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) dragonfly and I was fortunate to see it at both this morning. It is such a strong, fast flyer and rarely seems to settle anywhere that getting photos is extremely difficult.
The larvae in the Buckthorn Bent-wing (Bucculatrix frangutella) leaf mines are now leaving their spiral tracks as they grow in size.
Knopper galls are starting to fall from the oak trees and the wasp larvae will pupate inside and remain amongst the leaf litter throughout the winter, before emerging as adult wasps next Spring.
The are just 4 small patches of Common Heather (Calluna vulgaris) remaining on the Downs (that I have located) and all are now in full bloom. The posted image is of the largest of these patches.
Almost 3 months to the day since I first recorded Common Honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum) this year, but I have seen very little of it since.
