Another very overcast morning after a few overnight rain showers, which didn’t stop me adding several new insects to the list for this year. A moth, two flies and two wasps – Dingy Footman (Collita griseola), grass fly (Meromyza sp.), Snail-killing Fly (Trypetoptera punctulata), Yellow-tipped Darwin Wasp (Ichneumon stramentor) and Oriental Chestnut Gall Wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus) galls on Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa).
Another wildflower added is Rosebay Willowherb (Chamaenerion angustifolium), although belatedly, as this one has probably been flowering for at least two weeks already.
It is now also that time of year when fungi are starting to appear. Two seen today were a ‘Bolete’, possibly a Lurid Bolete (Suillellus luridus) and an ‘Agaric’, perhaps The Prince (Agaricus augustus). When it comes to fungi I could be way off the mark even on family, as the rate of change in colour and form of mushrooms can, in some species, be measured literally in hours. I post the images in the hope that someone may be able to help with a more definitive ID.
