Explore the diverse flora and fauna on the Downs from season to season through personal observations and photographs

Friday, 30 Jan 2026

Got lucky and had a dry early afternoon walk (but that’s not underfoot) free from the unpredictable showers of today. The focus was still on fungi.

Today’s finds included Netted Crust Fungus (Byssomerulius corium) on a dead ivy vine and Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) on a dead branch. A dead oak tree with a double trunk showed extensive growth of Hairy Curtain Crust (Stereum hirsutum) on one trunk and Black Witches’ Butter (Exidia glandulosa) on the other.

While photographing this oak tree I was aware of something crawling on the back of my hand and looked down to see a Birch Catkin Bug (Kleidocerys resedae), which had probably been temporarily aroused from its overwintering state by the slightly warmer conditions of the past few days.
