Explore the diverse flora and fauna on the Downs from season to season through personal observations and photographs

Good numbers of Brown Argus present today, outnumbered by Small Copper, which are in much greater numbers than recent days.

Insects added today were Tiger Ichneumon Wasp (Ichneumon xanthorius), a tiny (+/- 5 mm) Orthocentrus ichneumon wasp that landed on my watch strap, European Garden Spider (Araneus diadematus) and Kite-tailed Robberfly (Machimus atricapillus).

Also photographed were another ichneumon wasp (Ichneumon suspiciosus) that was first seen 3 days ago, a 1st instar nymph of the Dock Bug (Coreus marginatus) and Large White (Pieris brassicae) caterpillars on the large patches of Horseradish that I monitor regularly.

Latest wildflower is the perennial vine White Bryony (Bryonia dioica), a member of the pumpkin and squash family Cucurbitaceae.

Amongst the fruits and berries the Hawthorn ‘haws’ are starting to ripen. Lime and birch fruits are not yet showing signs of ripening.
