A few showers of rain yesterday, not that you’d notice. Still Marbled White butterflies everywhere you look and both Small Heath and Ringlet seem to be increasing in numbers. First sighting of the summer this morning of a single Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas).
Other insects seen were Common Green Shield Bug (Palomena prasina) 3rd instar nymphs on a Rubus sp. leaf, Cinnabar Moth (Tyria jacobaeae) caterpillars on a Ragwort plant, a Meadow Grasshopper (Pseudochorthippus parallelus) and summer form Common Sycamore Aphid (Drepanosiphum platanoidis).
New flowers are another of the tricky yellow composites, Smooth Hawk’s-beard (Crepis capillaris), as well as Wild Marjoram (Origanum vulgare).
The fruit of many trees and shrubs are starting to ripen. Hips, haws, conkers, brambles and acorns are all starting to show signs of colour other than green. The cherries of the Wild Cherry (Prunus avium) are already well on the way to fully ripe.
