Explore the diverse flora and fauna on the Downs from season to season through personal observations and photographs

A second Eurasian Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla), one of the summer migrant birds, was noted this morning.

It was very windy again today, but some good overnight rain meant that in the more sheltered areas there was still a lot of insect activity.

Yet again there were lots of Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) butterflies on the woodland paths while Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus) and Small Blue (Cupido minimus) prefer the grassland along the woodland edges. There are definitely a lot more Small Blue around than I have seen for several years.

Other insects photographed today are Large Yellow-girdled Tenthredo (Tenthredo maculata), Wasp Beetle (Clytus arietis), Chequered Weevil (Liophloeus tessulatus), Early Bumblebee (Bombus pratorum) and Marmalade Hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus).

Latest wildflower is Curly Dock (Rumex crispus) one patch of which was infested with Black Bean Aphid (Aphis fabae). European Privet (Ligustrum vulgare) is blossoming and on one I came across Trivial Plant Bug (Closterotomus trivialis).
