Some good heavy rain in the past 2 days but the ground has been so dry that all was soaked up leaving the paths only slightly damp. No muddy puddles anywhere. At least that awful straw colour of the grass is returning to green with much new growth stimulated by the rain.
A week since my first Chalkhill Blues this summer, but today there appears to have been another major eruption and every step seemed to cause 3 or 4 to fly up and away.
A very good day for new insects too – Pouting Woodlouse-Fly (Rhinophora lepida), Brown Heath Robberfly (Machimus cingulatus), an ichneumon wasp (Endromopoda detrita?), German Wasp (Vespula germanica) and Common Yellow-face Bee (Hylaeus communis).
Other insects photographed were Black-tailed Aphideater (Eupeodes luniger), Tapered Drone Fly (Eristalis pertinax) and probably the most common of the wasps right now Ornate-tailed Digger Wasp (Cerceris rybensis).
Newly flowering wildflowers are Common Eyebright (Euphrasia nemorosa), Common Harebell (Campanula rotundifolia), Hawkweed Oxtongue (Picris hieracioides) and Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris).
