Explore the diverse flora and fauna on the Downs from season to season through personal observations and photographs

Having seen my one and only Green-veined White (Pieris napi) this summer yesterday, another presented itself for a photo opportunity this morning.

New additions to the insect list are Ringed Tubetail (Fagisyrphus cinctus) hoverfly and Common Red Soldier Beetle (Rhagonycha fulva), a major emergence of these, swarming all over Cow Parsley and Hogweed. Also, on the large patch of Horseradish mentioned in my post of 14th June, some 1st instar nymphs of Brassica Shieldbug (Eurydema oleracea) and a on a Rubus sp. leaf a 22-spotted Ladybird (Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata).

On an oak leaf I discovered the aptly named galls of the Silk-button Spangle Gall Wasp (Neuroterus numismalis).

Returning to the Cottony Hydrangea Scale (Pulvinaria kuwacola) egg sacs of my 23rd June post I found that some eggs had hatched and the scale insect nymphs were swarming over and around the egg sac. A predatory final instar 14-spotted Ladybird (Propylea quattuordecimpunctata) larva was feasting on those that remained in the egg sac.

Latest plant to start flowering is Broadleaf Plantain (Plantago major).
