After 3 days of rain during Storm Chandra the underfoot conditions on the paths on the Downs are extremely muddy and slippery, so a walk on the leaf litter in the woodland solved that problem. It also meant that my focus was again very much on lichens and fungi. As always with these there is big question mark against my IDs.
First encountered was a Xylaria sp. on a sawn-off trunk, possibly Candlesnuff (Xylaria hypoxylon). The same trunk also had Hairy Curtain Crust (Stereum hirsutum) in the early stages of growth and another fungus that I have not even attempted to identify.
Jelly fungi have been rehydrated by all the rain and are popping up everywhere. I post images of one pale orange specimen and one purple-black one, neither of which I have identified.
A dead but still rooted sapling (also ID unknown) sported extensive patches of what appears to be the asexual stage of Coral Spot Fungus (Nectria cinnabarina), interspersed with a lichen, possibly Asterisk Lichen (Arthonia radiata).
Another lichen that caught my attention on a broken off dead oak branch in close proximity to some jelly fungi was Oakmoss (Evernia prunastri).
