Explore the diverse flora and fauna on the Downs from season to season through personal observations and photographs

Saturday, 10 Jan 2026

Another cold day, but after some persisent rain in the past couple of days all the snow and ice is gone. So, it was back to a search of the woodland for something of interest. Fallen birch trunks and branches proved most profitable, with four photo opportunities.

Removing a loose flap of bark on one revealed beneath what I believe to be a cluster of snail eggs, although this is by no means a definitive ID.

On three separate fallen birches I came across a jelly fungus, Crystal Brain (Myxarium nucleatum), a crust fungus, perhaps Wrinkled Crust (Phlebia radiata ?) and a slime mould, possibly Scrambled Egg Slime also known as Dog Vomit Slime Mould (Fuligo septica ?).
