Explore the diverse flora and fauna on the Downs from season to season through personal observations and photographs

A migrating Northern Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) spent a good part of the day searching for insects, spiders and worms from its perches on the fenceposts of the new sheep enclosure. I spent quite a while chasing it from post to post before finally getting a decent photo.

I found leaf mines of the larva of the Buckthorn Bent-wing (Bucculatrix frangutella) moth on a Common Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) as well as an unidentified leaf mine (or perhaps just leaf grazing) on a Silver Birch (Betula pendula) leaf. The buckthorn leaf mine is quite distinctive, with the tiny larva working its way through the leaf fabric in a spiral. As it gets bigger it will eventually break out of the spiral. I will keep looking and will hopefully soon see that.
