Explore the diverse flora and fauna on the Downs from season to season through personal observations and photographs

New insect today another one of those very confusing ichneumon wasp males that all look very similar. My best guess on this one and it could be the most appropriate name for it in this case is Ichneumon confusor.

On the upper surface of an English Oak leaf I came across what I believe to be the leaf mine of the larva of the Shoulder-spot Dot (Stigmella basiguttella?) moth. Many of the Stigmella moth larvae have very similar leaf mines. A few are host specific but many can occur on a variety of hosts.

While taking this photo of a Common Froghopper (Philaenus spumarius) it was difficult to avoid calling out, like a child at a pantomime, “Behind you!”
